The spiritual life is not meant to tranquilize us, nor is it divorced from life. It is neither imprisoned in cold rules and intellectual practices, nor to be confused with psychology. It contains no conflicting dualism, but rather a deep and liberating unity of the person, who “lives immersed in the Holy Spirit” and whose life is “illumined in all its dimensions: intellectual, affective, and emotional.” For Christians, to believe in God means to acknowledge the God who is Love, and to cultivate this relationship. In this way, things, objects and events radiate to us something of the fire of God, as the burning bush did for Moses in the desert.
